Switched to WordPress

Bit the bullet and finally switched over. Imported all of the old posts via RSS so the formatting is all messed up but better than nothing. :)

Farewell old friend…

I’ve decided to rebuild JMD.cc into something else. Not sure exactly what at this time but it will be a blog of some sort. I will be dropping the sNews software in favor of something more robust. Don’t get me wrong, I love sNews a lot. The simplicity and customization is great, I just need something different for my new endeavor (I’m aiming for something coding/VPS related).

No ETA at this time, but I’ll probably either move the articles over or keep it up as an archive.

I completely forgot about this site. Shame on me!

How to run a cronjob on a Synology NAS

1. Edit /etc/crontab (nano /etc/crontab)
2. Restart crond service (synoservice –restart crond)
3. DONE!

Yup, I just spent the past hour trying to figure out why my cronjob wasn’t working (never occurred to me that it wasn’t running until about 10 minutes ago). I’ve gotten so used to crontab reloading when you use “crontab -e” on other linux distros. Once I restarted the crond service it worked perfect… this is like the 5th time I’ve done this so I’m making this article to remind me in the future. :D

Oh boy has it been a while!

Long story short, Secure Dragon LLC. took off like a rocket and I’ve been investing a lot of my time towards it while it continues to grow. Unfortunately there is A LOT of stuff still in the works and I have a massive ToDo list but I hope to stop neglecting this site as much as I am. I’ve got an article I just now decided I wantneed to write about ITT Tech, where I graduated from last March. No no, it’s not a bad article per-se, it’s just explaining my opinion about the school and who I recommend going there and who should avoid it. Even with the massive student loans, I’m kind of glad I went.

In other news, Zoe got her first tooth and I start my new job on August 29th as a Server Tech (Windows… ewww).

Quick update.

I’ve been really busy with the final touches of Secure Dragon LLC. and getting everything setup. I’m really happy with the direction we’re heading now and I just hope it works out. Tell me what you think of the site. ;)

In other news I am tired of shared hosting and when I get some free time I will be moving my sites over to one of my many LEBs (Low End Boxes). I will most likely be setting up replication and failover since I am not sure how reliable the LEBs are just yet. More on that later too.

Lots of projects in the works.

Here’s a list of projects I am working on, planning, or thinking of (in no particular order):

Uptime Monitoring Website – This originally started out as something fun to do for myself, then the idea grew and now I’ve got a nice domain and working on a client area to make a public website/server monitoring site similar to BinaryCanary.com except less restrictions for free accounts. I picked up a small VPS a while back and while the VPS has been doing a great job for testing the uptime and performance are not reliable so I picked up another cheap VPS from a different host (same data center though, oh well). I also have 2 other servers setup along with a 5th lined up for purchase once I get some answers from the hosting company. So that will provide me with 2 OpenVZ VPSs in Texas, 1 Xen VM in Illinois, 1 Xen VM in Los Angeles, and 1 Dedicated Server in Florida. I’ve got the shell scripts for the server setup and running nicely and the MySQL server is working perfectly, I just need to finish the PHP backend and get some redundancy setup for the MySQL and web server and we’ll be all set!

Free Web Hosting Network – I got the idea last week and I posted the idea on FreeWHT with a little interest. I got the domain setup and am working on site now, mostly I’m waiting for the site design to get done before releasing it publicly. Right now I have a lot of planning done but want to find some core people to help work out the specifics and help get the ball rolling.

Hosting – Been putting a lot of thought into getting back in the game, spent the past few days debating between Free or Paid Shared/Reseller Hosting or Low-end VPS hosting. I’ve been working on my cPanel Hosting MyBB plugin in some of my free time so it would be nice to put it to use.

Backup Dragon – Been doing a lot of planning and research for this and ran some ideas by Jeremy already, we’ve got a new gameplan and I’m excited. Jeremy has been doing some testing in his virtual lab and it looks promising. We have a meeting Wednesday so hopefully all will work out and we can get to the implimentation. Until then I’ve been tweaking the site and operations a bit.

Escape Reality – I’ve been wanting to find something to do that is relaxing and pointless. I’ve considered getting back into gaming but that can get expensive. Right now I’ve got 2 ideas standing out more than the others. One is a browser based game that I’ve been tossing around in my head for a while, I’ve got the domain and the code planned out but I just need to impliment it and in reality this would be more fun if I had other people involved so I wouldn’t just be playing my own game. The second is a website that I really don’t know if I should discuss or not. Let’s just say it’s inspired by this and this. Just not sure. :(

I’ve got some other things on my mind but I think these are the closest to becoming real.

My HP Mini 210 can remember stuff now.

I upgraded my HP Mini 210 from 1GB of DDR3 to 2GB of DDR3 (supposedly the max) and I’m happy to say that it’s running fine. Apparently there is an issue with HP Mini 210s where they are really picky about the RAM that they use. I was lucky to be successful on the first try but some people have gone through 5-6 sticks only to be met with errors on POST.

So I’m writing this article to confirm that Patriot Signature 2GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model PSD32G160081S works on my HP Mini 210-2000. :)

The power of the Intel Atom!

Not only am I huge fan of Intel Atom based servers for their awesome performance and low cost but I have an Intel Atom in my home server (Intel Atom 230) and my main PC is my HP Mini 210 netbook (Intel Atom N550). I have a secondary netbook that I use for testing and as a webserver but it’s running a VIA C7 CPU which has a little kick to it all things considered.

Well I push my HP 210 to the limit sometimes and while I thought I was doing so just now I found I wasn’t.

I installed VMWare Player and was building an Arch Linux VM, while this was building I was watching My Darkest Day’s Pornstar Dancing on YouTube in 720p. My WIFI signal is around 80% so I’m jumping between 36-54Mbps and I had to grab about 66MB of SWAP but my CPU load was only around 2.0 which is good considering I have 4 cores (2 physical + HT) so my CPU is only about 50%. I need to get some games on here and see what I can really do with this little 210. :D

Oh, and I’ve been on battery since I woke up around 5PM and I’m at 35% right now so I’m getting some good battery life out of it considering all of the work I’ve been doing so far and Zoe got to listen to The Echoing Green on Grooveshark for 3-4 hours when I wasn’t on it.
